News From Our Artists

Danny Markey is an award winning artist whose roots are in Falmouth and who Beside the Wave are very proud to represent. 
His work has been chosen for the Discerning Eye, Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize and the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition.  This year he is one of the judging panel for the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition.
"Now in its 26th year, The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition champions the beauty and diversity of the medium of watercolour, and celebrates all works produced in water-based mediums, whether abstract or figurative, contemporary or traditional. A total of £18,000 will be awarded to artists who demonstrate a high level of skill and creativity. Prizes include a First Prize of £10,000, Second Prize of £6,000 and the Smith & Williamson Cityscape Prize of £1,500.



The 2013 judging panel is: Julia Farrer, artist; Danny Markey, artist; Dr Susan Owens, Curator of Painting, Victoria & Albert Museum; Desmond Shawe-Taylor CVO, Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures; and Hugh Pearman, critic & writer, The Sunday Times. They will select approximately 100 works for an exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London from 16-21 September 2013, followed by the Smith & Williamson tour to venues throughout the UK."

Anne-Marie Butlin, better known at Beside the Wave for her exquisite still life painting, has been busy painting equally beautiful portraits and has had one of her portraits accepted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

It is a fascinating thing to be able to watch an artist work.  To be able to begin to understand how a painting is constructed and what thought processes the artist goes through to achieve apparently effortless brilliance.

This week we have a Special Collection by an artist who is rapidly gaining a deserved reputation for her wonderful flower paintings. 

 

 

In January's edition of Artist and Illustrator magazine she gives a masterclass into one of her paintings, a step by step look.

These images are taken from the article and it comes as no surprise that her working methods are so well considered.

Anne-Marie Butlin makes paintings that are beautifully feminine with such strength and purpose that we are left in no doubt that each brushstroke and every colour has been placed deliberately and thoughtfully considered.

Delicate flowers and fine china radiate presence and form, beautiful parades of colour march across the canvas.

Christmas Updates

Sarah Wimperis will be painting miniatures.  Using tiny brushes and specially prepared surfaces she will be creating some new but very tiny works of art.  She will also have samples of vellum, ivorine and a very small piece of 10,000 year old mammoth tusk (Mammoth is no longer on the endangered species list) So if you would like to watch for a while, ask questions or even have a little go with the magnifying glasses and minute brushes she will be in the upper gallery from 10am until 5pm on Saturday 17^th December and Thursday 22^nd December.
