A Year Of Flowers

The blog title should read "Dunbar has Done it Again" because she certainly has.  The gallery is alive with a collection of the most beautiful, glorious, colourful and happy paintings.

They are simply lovely paintings.  Emma paints flowers with the ease of a gardeners intimate knowledge, her Primula's grow right out of the paintings, her Anemones sing with vibrant voices.

I think, if I had to choose I would have this one. Just look at that splash of yellow pepper and the playful squiggle next to it, the big fat, black pan and the beautifully painted Aubergines, and the colours...ooh it makes me go all breathless!!  But, and here is the difficulty I also love this one...

The colours, and chocolate and those mugs! It is a gorgeous exhibition, well worth a visit and a dip into the wonderful world of Dunbar.  I think they should have a health warning though, they wont rot your teeth but they might make you so happy that you pop!

Down at the Allotments

Are you fed up with the doom and gloom of recession-speak, do you want the Olympic-proud-to-be-British feeling to carry on? 
How about digging deep into the very British obsession with gardening and grow-your-own along with a truly glorious explosion of colour and joie de vive and visiting the gallery to experience the newest exhibition of Emma Dunbar's work.

A wonderfully exuberant collection of paintings celebrating allotments, from the dark brown corduroy of well tilled early spring soil, to an almost abstract patchwork of colourful sheds.  From the sgraffito of winter trees to the loose hatching of bean poles. 
The paintings are punctuated with effortless still lives.  Plates of harvested peppers, bundles of beans, a gardeners tea and biscuits, sit beside beautifully painted pots of plants or bunches of garden flowers stuffed haphazardly into Emma's enviable collection of cups and mugs.

It is a great showcase of Emma Dunbar's skill with composition, colour and collage. 
If you are fond of cheerfulness, colour and gardening and you want to bring a smile into every day then these paintings will tick all the boxes.

Christmas Updates

White Roses and Pears

Sarah Wimperis will be painting miniatures.  Using tiny brushes and specially prepared surfaces she will be creating some new but very tiny works of art.  She will also have samples of vellum, ivorine and a very small piece of 10,000 year old mammoth tusk (Mammoth is no longer on the endangered species list) So if you would like to watch for a while, ask questions or even have a little go with the magnifying glasses and minute brushes she will be in the upper gallery from 10am until 5pm on Saturday 17^th December and Thursday 22^nd December.

The gallery is filled with a joyous burst of colour.  Lovely paintings grace the walls each one like a secret scrap book full of experience, memory and musing. Collections of things arranged and rearranged, sorted and saved.  At once both thoughtfully intricate and simply bold.

 
Beautifully painted flowers nestle against exuberant swathes of colour.  Colours that should clash dont seem to, everything has its place in the wonderful world of Emma Dunbar.

Patterned ceramics are lovingly rendered with a Fedden like simplicity, marks made by painting on and scratching out.  Images are collaged in and painted over, gold is added only to be hidden later.  Its a treasure hunt, a romp through a collectors cupboards.

Birds peck at a richly textured purple earth, sheep are scattered on patterned fields, moss green on emerald beside viridian.  Trees and twigs appear as flat designs or as scraffito marks into patches of carefully applied paint.

These are woven, multi layered and finely worked paintings that express a joie de vivre.  They are a celebration of the little things in life that are so important. They are quite simply, joyful.
