This week we are introducing a new artist: Oliver Bevan.

Bevan is a British artist who
was born in Peterborough, UK, in 1941 and educated at Eton College.

After leaving
school he spent a year in 1959-60 working for Voluntary Service Overseas in
British North Borneo before returning to London to study painting at the Royal
College of Art, where he became strongly influenced by Op Art and in particular
the work of Victor Vasarely.

Bevan graduated from the RCA in 1964 and had his
first exhibition of Op Art-inspired paintings the following year. Optical,
geometric and kinetic art then served him well until the late 1970's. Then he
moved to the Canadian prairies for a two-year teaching post at the University
of Saskatchewan. By the time he returned to London in 1979 he had abandoned
abstract art in favour of figurative art and urban realism.

For three weeks in January work from a selection of gallery artists will be for sale at significantly discounted prices. Start a Collection offers work by artists such as Miles Heseltine, Sarah Wimperis, Richard Tuff and Richard Thorn, at prices that are more accessible to both first-time buyers and well-established collectors.
A selection of 50 works from the gallery collections will go on sale with savings of up to £1,000 on major works by key gallery artists. The collection is published online and works will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

It's a little beauty, in the gallery now and could be yours for only £49.50 per month with own art, that is equivalent to less than three and a half pints of middle (spingo from Helstons Blue Anchor) per week, according to my dear husband. Now I know what I would prefer and which is better for your health!

We also had a delivery of Annie Hellyer's beautifully mesmeric pots, hot off the kiln. Full of energy and perfect meditation all at one and the same time, starting from only £75 they are striking collectors pieces and I want one...now, with a very special shelf to show off its pristine form as well. I hope Father Christmas is listening!

We will be open for late night shopping every Thursday evening untill Christmas, and our window will also be growing...that's exciting! Watch this space...I will update!

We have had a very busy few weeks. Battersea Affordable Art Fair was our best fair to date, selling very well for Miles Heseltine, both his extraordinary, huge plein-air drawings as well as his wonderfully expressive and painterly paintings. We sold a glorious Wadsworth and a lovely collection of Wimperis paintings.
Right now in the gallery we have the tail end of a simply gorgeous Richard Tuff collection, The Colours of the South Coast. Richards work continues to evolve in many ways, his mastery of colour seems to grow with every exhibition and the confidence and fluidity with which he handles the paint is beautiful.
They have been flying out of the gallery. If you have been unlucky this time we are holding a 25th anniversary exhibition of Richard Tuff's work next June, 6th to 20th 2014, a date to put in your diary!

We have had a selection of work from one of our new artists, Nigel Chamberlain, two have already sold, as they were leaving the gallery to go to the framers! He is one to watch, I am hoping that we will be able to show them for the Christmas collection.

Christmas is fast approaching, we have our Christmas Mixed Exhibition, Little Gems, opening evening (mince pies, mulled wine, mini masterpieces and merriment). We have a great collection from a lot of our artists of smaller works for under £500 as well as some impressive larger pieces. Please join us to start the festive season from 6pm on Thursday 28th November. It is the first night of late night shopping in Falmouth and we shall be opening until 8pm every Thursday up to Christmas.
There are still a few left on the walls if you want to wander along to the gallery and have a look. He is an artist whose work has the most mesmerising atmosphere and beautiful depth.
Tomorrow we open a new exhibition of paintings by Amanda Hoskin. Cornwall in all its lovely guises. Quiet evening sunsets, silent river stillness, beautiful light across the bay, images framed with the glories of Cornish hedgerows, overflowing with wild flowers.
Amanda has taken her paints and her sketchbooks and explored her favourite places. Living in Fowey many of these are also places that DuMaurier used as inspiration for her writing. Both artist and writer capturing the mystery and magic of this ancient landscape.

“ I decided to visit many of the areas described in Du Maurier’s novels. Seeing these places through her books and her imagination and then using the way I work to connect with the landscape has been a very interesting process. Her fascination with Cornish history has also provided a sense of the landscape of the past. Working on Bodmin Moor, time stands still where only the sky or light seems to change or Polridmouth Beach on a stormy morning with the sky a pinkish grey and the rocks black and menacing, images of Daphne Du Maurier characters would come to mind. For me she has put into words the landscape of Cornwall.”
It is a lovely collection of paintings, infused with a peaceful mood and created in a very fine, seemingly magical, manner. Amanda's sensitive splattering and perfectly placed marks working themselves into light on water, flowers on the cliff tops, distant masts and faraway homes.
Please join us at the gallery for an evening view with wine and canapés, on Friday 5th July from 6pm. The artist will be there and there will be a chance to see her brilliant sketchbooks, which will take your breath away!
There is also a hard backed book published to compliment this exhibition which contains many pages from her sketchbooks and the paintings that those sketches inform. It costs £25.00 and can be brought with a few clicks from our web site or from the gallery.
Beautiful, chalky gouache paintings. Rich colours, existing side by side in wonderful and surprising combinations. Mustard yellows with rose pinks, wine reds with olive greens, deep blues and softest lilac, all applied with a joyous confidence. These are the sort of paintings that certainly make you wish to visit Morocco but also make me want to dress in these colours, rush home and paint my living space in these colours. for Water is an exhibition and sale of original postcard-sized artworks
in support of the Falmouth Rotary’s WASH project in Uganda. Hosted by Beside
The Wave and supported by RTP Surveyors, the exhibition’s challenge is to raise
£3,000 in support of this vital work. In achieving this target, the proceeds of
the sale will unlock the final tranche of funding for a £124,000 project
designed to bring clean water and sanitation to two Ugandan communities. This
will result in improvements to health, education and economic development in
two Ugandan communities.

The exhibition at Beside The Wave
will include work by acclaimed and amateur artists, up and coming artists
(graduates, undergraduates and school children from Cornwall and Uganda), as
well as the odd celebrity.

Each postcard-sized work of art will
be sold for just £35.00 and, with many of the works valued at ten times this amount,
art lovers have the chance to bag a real bargain! Proceeds from the exhibition go
in their entirety to the Falmouth Rotary WASH project. The Rotary club is multiplying any donation by
3.5 so a postcard brought for £35.00 will in effect add £122.50 towards the
project.

The gallery is alive with a collection of the most beautiful, glorious, colourful and happy paintings.
People have been wandering around the exhibition like children in a sweet shop... "I want that one, no I want that one more, I cant decide, I want them all, all of them...NOW!"

They are simply lovely paintings. Emma paints flowers with the ease of a gardeners intimate knowledge, her Primula's grow right out of the paintings, her Anemones sing with vibrant voices.
Flowers painted with confidence and huge skill and a delightful carefree touch. Her colour combinations are brilliant, vibrant and happy.
I think, if I had to choose I would have this one. Just look at that splash of yellow pepper and the playful squiggle next to it, the big fat, black pan and the beautifully painted Aubergines, and the colours...ooh it makes me go all breathless!! But, and here is the difficulty I also love this one...
We are displaying a "painting of the day" in one of our windows, as well as on our face book page. These paintings are chosen by members of our team simply because it is one of their favourites. Alongside the painting is a short sentence about why they like it. It is always interesting to discover what people see in a painting, and you do not have to be an expert to fall in love with a painting.
If you would like to nominate a favourite painting by one of our artists have a look through our stock and drop us an email with the title and why you like it and we will display it in the window.
Have a look at our face book page to see the daily painting, and "like" the page to see them every day.beside-the-wavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12036864014078225717noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1775909113279979949.post-28405145855501921682013-04-11T08:33:00.001+01:002013-04-11T08:33:24.590+01:00Let There Be LightAnd so it is! Andrew Giddens has a true gift, he can paint water that appears glassy and clear whilst having the huge weight and swell of the sea, right there, inside the painting.
It is a lovely collection, the show runs from 10am on Friday 12th of April continuing until the 24th.
There is an evening viewing from 6pm on Friday where you can enjoy a glass of wine, meet Andrew and be exhilarated by the swell of the sea.

It is a fascinating thing to be able to watch an artist work. To be able to begin to understand how a painting is constructed and what thought processes the artist goes through to achieve apparently effortless brilliance.

This week we have a Special Collection by an artist who is rapidly gaining a deserved reputation for her wonderful flower paintings.

In January's edition of Artist and Illustrator magazine she gives a masterclass into one of her paintings, a step by step look.

These images are taken from the article and it comes as no surprise that her working methods are so well considered.

Anne-Marie Butlin makes paintings that are beautifully feminine with such strength and purpose that we are left in no doubt that each brushstroke and every colour has been placed deliberately and thoughtfully considered.

Delicate flowers and fine china radiate presence and form, beautiful parades of colour march across the canvas.
